What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

What is Autism

A question we receive frequently at Phoenix Behavioral Health is, “what actually is autism? And if my child does have it, what can I do to help him/her?“

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disorder that impacts the nervous system. ASD can vary, ranging on a wide spectrum of abilities and challenges, extending from quite moderate to more severe. Challenges include delayed language and communication skills, difficulty and/or lack of interest in social interactions, focused interests, and repetitive or stereotyped behaviors. Focused interests may create limited opportunities for development of friendships and peer interaction and can lead to meaningful hobbies and careers. It’s important to teach play and social skills that enhance peer relationships while also celebrating special interests. People with ASD may also have different ways of learning, moving or paying attention.  While recent research indicates genetics is a significant factor, a proven cause of ASD remains unknown.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, recent statistics show that ASD affects 1 in 36 children and occurs in all racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups. ASD is nearly 4 times more common among boys than girls. Initial signs typically appear during the early childhood years. Early diagnosis and intervention are key to a successful future and can result in significant improvement in symptoms. Talking with your pediatrician will help determine if your child should be tested by a trained psychologist who can diagnosis Autism Spectrum Disorder. The professionals at Phoenix Behavioral Health Services can perform the necessary testing and then coordinate a plan with your family to provide ongoing treatment and support. While ASD cannot be cured, there are treatments such as Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) available to help reduce symptoms that interfere with daily functioning and quality of life. Treatments can be performed in education, health, community or home settings, or a combination of the settings.
