Paul Perales is an experienced licensed clinical social worker, clinical director of counseling, and substance abuse counselor-in training working with children, teens, adults, couples, and groups. His areas of expertise include general mental health issues, men’s issues, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) and sexual identity development, trauma, and substance abuse disorders.

His approach to therapy is client-centered describing it as walking alongside people to help them achieve their identified goals in life. Paul uses a narrative therapy approach to change a client’s problem-saturated story into one more aligned with the vision of a life without the problem.

Using person-in-environment and systems theory, Paul helps individuals understand their interactions with the world around them. When called for, he uses training in cognitive behavioral therapy with a trauma focus, emotionally-focused couples therapy, and solution-focused therapeutic strategies. Paul also works with individuals who want to reduce or eliminate substance use leaning on motivational interviewing techniques.

Paul is an educator at the University of WI-Oshkosh Social Work Department and in the community providing students of social work and professionals with education and training in the field, policy, group work, macro practice, diversity, social/environmental/economic justices, professional boundaries, and ethics. He is a member of the National Association of Social Workers and the Association of Social Work Boards.

In addition to his love of social work Paul also enjoys spending time with his family especially outdoors, swimming, biking, running, and kayaking.
